Horse Racing for The New York Times

I was honored to be part of a team that just published an investigative piece in The New York Times about the perils of horse racing in the United States. It’s a heartbreaking story about how the new economics of horse racing have put both horse and jockey at serious risk of injury and death.

These photos are from Ruidoso last fall. It was a horrifying scene to see this horse, Teller All Gone, go down in front of me and get euthanized on the track. It was equally horrifying to see the way his body was dumped like a piece of gagbage out behind an old shed.

I hope this story is a first step toward rectifying the way both horses and jockeys are treated by the horse racing industry.

Sol, like the rest of us, is a big Breaking Bad fan so we did the informal Breaking Bad tour, lucha libre masks and all.

Two of the sweetest people on earth, our friends Nathan and Hailey, came to visit us this weekend from LA. We gave them a taste of NM—from green chile to chain saws—and spent hours laughing, crying and enjoying each other’s company.
